PSMJ? Do What?
As you may have heard, this month I have joined PSMJ Resources, Inc. as the Executive in Charge of the Advisory Services business – management consulting and in-house training. This originally unexpected development came through a protracted conversation (and many meetings) with PSMJ owner Frank Stasiowski, about our businesses, potential collaborations, and the future of consulting for the design, construction, and environmental services markets. Ultimately we agreed that our missions were the same, the future is indeed bright, and that together we could accomplish some really innovative stuff in helping AEC clients to achieve growth, profit, and sustainable business success.
So here I am, at yet another exciting and challenging career threshold. With PSMJ I’ll remain focused on my passion in working with senior firm leaders to plan for the future, grow their business, and make more money – but I’ll pursue these objectives with a much larger (and growing) team of talented professional consultants, trainers, speakers, and support staff. For you the client, fundamentally this means broader focus, better service, and more value. I’m really giddy about the possibilities.
I’m reminded now of what author Tom Friedman (The World is Flat) has said about our careers – that we must live them always “in beta”– continuously innovating along a journey that’s never quite done. We’re almost always just a short step away from dramatic, disruptive life-shifting change. Stay in beta!
Fast Future (The Book) is Out!
Our new book Fast Future! Ten Uber-Trends Changing Everything in Business and Our World (Advantage Media Group) is out now and doing well. This book is changing the nature of our conversations with clients – about what’s most important in the firm, and what’s likely ahead on the road of business. At the starting line I assumed this project would be like other writing assignments – scores of articles, blog posts, and presentations for speeches and webinars – only bigger. That was a miss! Yes they are related, in the same way that a Velociraptor is sort of like a bird. It was big project, a big effort, and a big emotional toll. Lots of people were involved. Moving Up!
Many of my professional friends and colleagues – consultants, trainers, and speakers – have commented recently that business is ticking up, after a long tough slog over the recessionary years. I’ve seen it too and so has PSMJ. Things are looking up and momentum is accelerating fast – particularly in strategic consulting and training. It’s not of course that important issues disappeared during the downturn, but that many leaders simply lost focus (or courage) on investing to address longer term challenges and opportunities. Now with a little more business and confidence, we’re seeing an important return to the training room and the planning table. What will your firm do this year to prepare for Fast Future! success?
It’s a busy time in my world – as I’m sure it is in yours.
Its’ easy to agree (conceptually) that growth, profit, and sustainable success are important objectives in the firm, and should be cultivated. But many of these initiatives aren’t urgent – at least in the short term – and it’s not so hard to push them aside for just one more day.
